The Key is trying to be a gift of forgiveness - for myself and for a long, lost friend. Over a decade ago, I hurt this friend of mine very deeply. It was a tumultuous time, when my biggest dreams were coming true. But as William Blake says, “heaven and hell are born together” — and at the turn of the century, true to Blake’s words, my worst nightmares also befell me. My pain spilled over onto many around me, and I felt helpless. In some ways, I still do.

This is the newest track for my album Open, still slowly trudging along. Thanks for your continued support!

The Key

Your hate moves like a freight train, steady with a heavy weight
Barreling down for many years
Delivering loads of pain, refueling again and again
Any hope caught in your smoke just disappears
It’s your turn

You draw a hard line in the sand, make them walk a wire when they’re much too young to stand
Over your chasm revenge widens everyday, the innocent say, “hey now, love’s the only way”

It’s your turn to say you’re sorry, your turn to fall down on your knees
Maybe you’ll learn that you’ve been hurting the ones that you love more than me
It’s your turn

Set yourself free, you hold the key
Set yourself free, what will be will be

You assess a lofty fare (for your grief train), with thorns barricading all the roads from here to there
Where our diamonds in the rough are suddenly growing up
Your scorn crown and bitter cup are now theirs to bear

It’s your turn to say you’re sorry, your turn to fall down on your knees
Maybe you’ll learn that you’ve been hurting the ones that you love more than me

Set yourself free, only you hold the key
Set yourself free, what will be will be
Set yourself free, only you hold the key
