I love it! The understated (that’s a good thing!) arrangement and production in support of SB3’s stunning vocal performance really hits the spot.
Peter’s supportive drum track and Mindmovie’s showpiece guitar work as well as his bass contributions all brought together in a cohesive production. Classy, impressive stuff throughout, Mr. TJ and friends! |

I just read up on the discussion regarding where the “one” should be in the vocal track.
Fascinating experience. Since I haven’t worked with the original vocal track, my “virgin ears” totally bought into the “one” as chosen in this remix. Period. No unpleasantness. Just a very laid back kind of groove where the vocal emphasis is on the two and four - essentially matching the snare drum in places or taking the place of an imaginary snare drum in the more open places. After reading the discussion below, I listened to a couple of other remixes, who placed the “one” a beat later in the vocal track. That may be the more straightforward approach, but it also is a little less exotic. But one warning - listening to remixes with the “one” in the other place and this remix in quick succession is a bit unsettling - both ways. At least it is for me. A fascinating exercise in musical listening memory and the emotions that evokes. So I understand the sense of un-ease some of the other reviewers felt, but I can also assure you that to “virgin listening” ears, this remix totally worked! One interesting note: In some of the other remixes, I seemed to sense an emphasis on 2 and 4 in other places later in the vocal track, where this remix has that emphasis on 1 and 3. So (not having worked with this acapella myself yet), it would appear that the vocal track legitimately has both feels present: emphasis on 1 and 3 and emphasis on 2 and 4. And if one keeps the track together, one will end up with both feels. Anyway, just very fascinating, and I just hope that this whole discussion has not spoiled your joy for a really wonderful remix. Because that it is! |

.
No Spin, thanks a lot for all these words. This discussion doesn´t spoil me at all!
I found it more very remarkable that a remix does cause such a huge an interessting discussion. Never made this experience before e.g. not on RW and not on MI7. So this makes this place very enjoyable for me. It would be a sad thing though if anybody here would had a listen to this remix. Finally it is a place for sharing ideas, opinions and experiences and I am really glad that you (yes, it was you:-))showed me the way to this exciting community. So I will not hesitate to try another remix here. I am just afraid that it will be probably again some “Jarreau” style like Loveshadow mentioned and start to bore people here! ;-) |

It was a real pleasure to work on this track, the vocal line is killer and inspired me a lot as you may also here in the guitar solo. The Joe is a very nice guy and a very good friend. He made this collaboration happening and I’d like to say thanks very much for giving me the opportunity to contribute to his fine work.

Very enjoyable - it’s a fabulous a capella and you’ve all done it justice.

Well, I know what cdk means, it’s about where you hear the strong beat - have a listen to my mix at http://ccmixter.org/media/f...
to see what I mean - but it’s a matter of taste, and it’s interesting to hear it this way too!! Anyway, it’s a great mix, and I think everyone’s saying that :) |

the instrumental is amazing, but i can’t help but notice the vocals are off a beat or two, but the instrumental is completely awesome.
i still recomend! |

i’m not trying to offend, just noticed, the track may sound a little better with the vocals taken back exactly 1 count, it would flow even better, try it you’ll see what i mean. nothing in the instrumental is off at all, it is literally perfect. follow?
“moment” could be on the first step, not on the snare, just a suggestion. |

Thanks a lot for the comment and the mentioned point of “groove-feel”.
Well this is completely interessting and so I have tried what you have suggested, not being sure if I could transform your idea exactly. So I have done different settings of placing the vocals. The result isn´t that easy to describe. In the first bars your suggestion works quite good, but a few bars later, everything is really out of time. But have a look on my reply to Loveshadows comment. Be sure I don´t see it as an offend! This is what Peter the drummer said: “It seems that some people have a very different concept of groove and feel, what is a normal thing, because everybody has a different taste though. And so I am glad to see that people came over and discuss this issue. Finally this is what makes the remix to something special!” However, thanks for starting this discussion and I will come over to your profile soon(this is no menace!);-) |

Wow … seriously nice instrumental. CDK’s right about the vox, but that’s probably an easy fix.
Damn, that’s a nice guitar solo … really good drums too big thumbs up |

I really like the old school soul feel to the whole thing. I must say it caught me off guard! I’ve grown quite accustomed to electronic vibe I hear a lot on this site! It’s so laid back warm and creamy smooth! The vocals seem to lay oddly in the groove but nonetheless, the only thing I can say WELL DONE!!! Keep on with the come on!!!
|
.
Thanks Mr. Carter!
We really wanted to do some oldschool fashioned RnB/Soul style and we are all glad that we could surprise you. The mentioned point of vocal placement is a funny thing though. I will follow Loveshadows propose and sent you the instrumental track. May be you can find a solution for it? |

Quote: Songboy3The vocals seem to lay oddly in the groove
I was intrigued by your comment and the general discussion around it, so I wrote a bit of a lengthier comment (as a reply to my own at the very top of the reviews). You of course know your song really well, and had the vocals in a particular place in the groove. However, when I listened to this particular remix, I came in with “virgin ears”. A fascinating experience. If you’re curious, have a peek at my comment up above. A general note - your a capella’s are outstanding - or should I say downright intimidating - however like a moth circling a flame, I won’t be be able to resist much longer :-) |

Dude…STOP MAKIN’ ME BLUSH!!! LOL!!! I gotta tell you - CCMIXTER and folks like The Joe, DJ Lang and Loveshadow (…a whole lotta folks, too! I’m just not gonna list them right now!)inspire me so much! This place is a godsend!!! So it’s good that folks hear the same music but get something different from it! THAT’S when I know I’ve done something right! That’s why I like The Joe’s remix & ccMixter in general - it’s a place to learn. But….you KNOW that already..LOL!

Top marks for the collaboration and performance. You really sound like a unit.
I mentioned you having a Jarreau feel to you before and once again this in that L is for Lover period , not a bad thing for me. Great production and sound quality, not convinced with the downbeat timing of the vocal against your swing beat but i can see where you were going. My call would be to post the backing or mail it to him and let Songboy see if he can develop an original tune to complete the collab scenario. I sure he is Moonlighting somewhere ;-) |
.
Thanks a lot Loveshadow!
It seems that the mentioned Jarreau style is gluing on my hands! Honest, this was not intended, probably something in my subconscious mind is fooling me? ;-) I will follow your very good propose to sent Frank Carter the instrumental track and see what he can do! Excellent idea and very constructive! |

I listen to this the first day it was on the site and took a few days to digest this track. First let me say that i love the music, that and the vocal talents of Songboy makes a winning combination. I did have to get comfortable with the placement of the vocals. They seem to bit more laid back, as it was said before.
Having the vocals a bit laid back is not a bad thing, just different. I can see how someone might think that they were slightly off. ( but The vocals are not off) After listening to this several times i came to realize, what a beautiful track you have created. Nice work. Very nice work. |
.
Thank you very much DJ Lang for this wonderful comment!
Your words about that vocal placement are true, right and really appreciated. Me and my musical mates are very honoured by your words and glad that you like it. Now I am drinking a digestive to your health!! :-) |

Superb! A lovely laid back rock guitar and a follow-up breakdown with organ stabs…outstanding! Well that’s my mix out of the window (for now…) lol. Thoroughly enjoyable mix that would stand-up on any current rnb album.
The quality of the mixdown is outstanding m8…totally loved it! |
.
Thank you so much for your kind words!
Me and my musical mates are very honoured. And from this side a heartful welcome to this site. Your presence here is an enrichment for the community! Aahm, your mentioned “organ stabs” are called “french horns” in my Emu sample library :-). Still wonder what your “m8” means…? |

Heh, life’s funny that way- I check out your page after you reviewed me, and here I find you doing a tour-de-force of one of my other remixes I tried doing in a simple style- just for a diiferent vox placement (not for the remix quality) you may want to check out Your collab blew my MIND!!

Geez I am really late to the party on this one. Really nice work all around. Great feel to this, especially nice to hear some instrumental work that lets loose a little. The mix is really well oriented in the stereo field, everything in a good place so that you can appreciate all the elements. Great work guys.
Sorry I’m so late ;-). |
.
Thanks too for this review essesq. As still mentioned, it_s never to late for commenting. Me and my mates are glad that you came over here and had a stop for listening.
That_s the important thing though on music. Again wishing you a Good Happy New Year 2008! |

Like essesq, I’m definitely late to the party. This is soooo tight and well laid out, production is tight. You have taken a couple of pells and put together tracks I’d expect to find on a disk, the airwaves, somewhere… Keep this going. If you need bass work for anything, lemme know, I’d love to collab.
|
.
Hello shimoda,
thank you so much for these uplifting words. Be sure, reviews like this one are never too late, the party is still going on :-) As you could see, this remix was a result of a collaboration and I want to thank you kindly for your offer of bass playing. I don_t know yet, but probably I will knock on your door soon to ask if you couldn_t pull out your bass guitar for a track!! |

JOE..WOW..great instrumentation.the last time i heard anyone play like that was early 80’s and i was front row, being mesmerised by the great band & voice of anita baker! brilliant musicianship..

Hello beckfords!
Thanks a lot for the very nice comment! Funny thing that some people detect this 6 month old remix. I will forward your comment to my musical mates and I think they all will feel very honoured by your words. Yes, Anita Baker, never had the chance to visit one of her shows, but always loved her style and music (the good old 80s…) ;-)! When I remeber right, there is already one of your vocal pellas somewhere on my pc waiting for the right musical background :-). Sooner or later…. |

Super luxe arrangement and production. Feels very polished. It may be my monitoring situation - but it sounds like the production could benefit from catching some of the upper mids in the harmonies and maybe strings and throwing them into an expensive verb or tube sim - might get you that shimmery air that you hear in these kinds of productions? Overall -
|
.
Hello and thanks!
What a surprise that after 8 months somebody detected this remix :-) It may be my monitoring situation not having remarked the missing upper mids. This could be more than possible, because I did the mix over headphones. Don_t know if I will work again on this remix and follow your welcome suggestion. Now I only need somebody with an expensive reverb or amp sim tool! ;-) I also realize now, that you have uploaded so much samples and a remarkable remix that I just have a listen. Will write a review soon! Thanks again for the comment, I will forward it to my collegues! |
|
.
Just to clarify (so you do not go chasing mids that are not missing) - I meant that in this genre, there is this sweet luxe sounding high sheen that is very wide. I experiment with getting this effect, in the music I work on, it equates to there being some sparkly wide air in the mix (I’ve not quite gotten to wear I want to be with that). So, definitely more of a production suggestion.
