A Northern African percussion section starts out in a groove that allows Martijn’s bassline to snake around the beat. Then an erhu slips to the front to inform the listener that this is NOT going to be what you might be expecting. The rhythm evolves into an unidentifiable hybrid as other musical elements start pouring in like a cruise liner taking on water. Suddenly, references to Sun-Ra and Zappa are occupying the same sonic space without struggling to find their place. Then for good measure you demonstrate that the part heard a moment ago also fits backwards quite nicely. What kind of musical sorcerer can take other people’s work and meld seemingly disparate passages into a master class on dissonance and juxtaposition? What I find truly stunning: this is what you simply call “Friday”.

This is a little embarrassing but would you believe I only just a few weeks ago ‘discovered’ Zappa’s Jazz From Hell album? Whoa, talk about stunning! Best thing I’ve heard since a couple years ago when I similarly belatedly ‘discovered’ Sun Ra’s Lanquidity.
