When I learned I was assigned essesq to remix I was delighted! I find her writing to be warm and direct, and resonant. And I was pleased to discover that she has shared some really great samples as well.

I was not at all sure where I would go with an essesq remix, but I knew, given her body of work, it would be someplace worth visiting. I was struck by the message and tenor of both poems, A Gift Unwrapped and Joy, and felt they worked well together.

The music started with essesq’s loop, and the rest of the rhythm track else emerged from that in a most unexpected way. I love what Haskel plays on this track — I am so grateful that he is willing to play with me.
