The horn sounds virtually off in the distance, with a kind of remote bit of jazz homage fun, from which peers out a little buzz-synth as if it were angry at Jay, and mowing down his Young Americans. I love that beats segue in next, in a Moroder’esque quiet
affect. The mix values between the vox and the synth is a bit uneven, and yet the effect is not displeasing. The instrumentation feels a bit flat, not as in pitch, but as in dynamics. I like the instrument choices, so my concern is more on the level of mixing values. Even in the most minimal techno, I like to feel that the beat and the synth are in control, and interacting with the voice. Here the sounds are good, but the sense of dancefloor mastery is not here. I like that bit of keyboard after “we are in love”. It’s a nice quiet break, well-thought-out. I like things that are not at frenetic tempos, but I could imagine this at 130-140. You’ve got a lot good going on in this one. It’s a pleasant listen. Yet I think that you could do a lot more with making the sound levels of the different components work a bit better together. Perhaps a few things like tiny bits of delay and reverb mingled with some minor play with phases would give this a more dynamic feel, too. I like that guitar part that closes this one out, but had it been tracked onto more than one track and perhaps made a bit more dynamic it would have worked even better. I think this is a good song, and a good choice of elements—the place I keep hearing further possibilities is in the mixing choices. The whole thing goes on 6+ minutes, though, and it’s never boring—it’s interesting and full of life |
