How did you recorded this? That hiss sounds liek a digital hiss to me, maybe I can help you with that (connections, equipment, routing, recording format? 44100 - 22050 - 16 - 8 bits?).

A first advice is, dont gate the hiss, is more notorious. This is a sample so let the producer or mix eng. do that if he think is what the track needs.

Hi! This was recorded from a bass guitar straight into GarageBand, via the guitar audio cable. This was quite an early recording, without benefit of an audio interface.

Question: by not applying a gate to the hiss, is it to ensure the nuances of the string work is picked up?

The signal of the mics is very weak, always is best to convert to a line signal thru an amp and then go into your sound card thru line input ‘cause the converters of those soundcards are very cheap (for me).

Not for that, is because the hiss going in and out each time you play is more obvious. When is there all the time you can ignore it. If I would do some hiss removal will be very hard because the hiss it’s not constant.
If you didn’t apply any gate, maybe something in the input chain is applying it.

Well you’ve heard Mellow Collie, so I’m going to try and do with this a bit of what I did with Mellow Collie.
