I wrote this song years ago. I was playing the piano, to my left there was a bay window. A bus pulled up and a little girl with a back pack got out and stopped at the end of my driveway and just stood there swaying to the piano until I stopped playing. I remember the trees sort of looked like they were swaying in the wind too and that image has just stuck with me.

I originally called this song apoptosis, which translates into gentle death, like the falling of leaves from trees. In biology its programmed cell death, a natural and necessary process for life to persist. “trembling branch’ is a martial arts practice (From Kenpo) much like Bruce Lee’s “Be like the water” philosophy.

Lyrics:

Be like a trembling’ branch
Follow the waters ways

When a cool wind is blowin
Be like a trembling branch

We’re fallin’ like leaves from a tree
We’re fading like memories
We’re fallin’ like leaves from a tree
Under our feet we’re pushin’ daisies

It’s ok just sway
Sway…my people sway
Sway…and you won’t break
Sway..my people sway
Sway…and you won’t break

Editorial pick

This song has been here for more than a year, and I just heard it yesterday.

Not only is this an amazing, mellow and contemplative song. It’s also my first Ed pick. I wanted something that wasn’t just easy to listen to, but something that spoke to me, and has now become, as I label it; a song in the soundtrack of my life.
