Nice.

That ‘muddy’ mix sounds good in headphones. Well, to me it does but then mastering is not my strong point.

Can you share any stems? (808, dx7?)

Thanks Speck :) I’ll post the stems when I’m back in the studio tomorrow.
The first mix sounded ok to me in headphones too, but I was shocked when I heard in the car (which has a really nice system). Proves the point that a mix needs to be tested across many mediums, cant always rely on headphones and the studio monitors.

I saw an interview once with some famous musician (was it Jack White?) who said he had set up a radio transmitter in his studio so he could go out into the parking lot and listen to a mix in his car before finalizing the master.

Firstly, a great remix.

Listening to the original version right now. The difference is definitely there, but it actually sounds better than I expected after reading your explanation. And my cheap JBL wireless headphones are quite bass-heavy.

Anyway, a good excuse to listen to a very good remix again. :-)

Thanks Sub, the first sounded ok in headphones at first to me too, but on a single bluetooth boom box and the car it sounded really crowded low down.
I think its easy to get ear fatigue with headphones. I remember Colab saying years ago that the best way to judge eq is at a much lower volume and on the cheapest speaker you can get your hands on.

Your setting here fits a 90s late night talk show, with the singer and band appearing 5 minutes before the end, on a stage slightly too small for the instruments. EQ is so difficult, but your schooling paid off here.

Whoa… I’m taken back to the slumber parties of my youth… and we just called the radio DJ to play this track! Great mix, Scomber!
