A solid ear here caused you to recognize the reggae potential for the vocals. Your skills at the mixer allowed you to build this wall of sound to enfold the melody. A good sense for flow gives it all a jaunty air. If there is an offending organ here, it may be the tongue, because the mix has a kind of hunger for heavy production values that cuts against the advantages that a more spare mix might have yielded. The result is that the “pop” dominates the “reggae”, so that while the listener is left with a real sense of your skills at the board, this particular listener is a bit distracted by the way a really promising set of ideas is watered down by the elements of the mix.
If this one had had some almost dub-style beats-only sequences, and the melody has been executed by something a bit simpler, I think this one could have tasted better to me. Still, my issue is on the level of aesthetics and not skill, and the overall mix works just fine. |
