You are right there is nothing noble about war and the song is not about that. As the poem it is based on it is about the futilty of war.

For me tomorrow Armistace Day is not about glorifying war but remembering those who had no choice but to take part.

If they cannot walk off into the light we leave them in the blood and gore of mans inhumanity to man and that to me is the greater crime.
