Cricket Seasoning

A study of airtone’s Cricket Soup (samplePack6). Thanks to airtone for submitting the inspiring samples.

I write music when I can’t sleep. I was after the mood of an early Autumn morning going from dark to first light.

I started with airtone’s chord sequence and the note patterns that support the main theme. The melody starts simply and loosely related to the theme gaining complexity and gradually mutates into the theme. In the last two verses the solo grand piano plays along with both the Cricket theme and the melody resolving the connection and completing the piece.

I changed the time signature and BPM from 96 to 72 which left the sample playing at the same speed and in 8/8 time. The tune starts in 1/8 beats, goes through 1/8 triplets, 1/16, 1/16 triplets which leads into the Cricket phrases. I used the beat changes to support the mood development that I wanted. The bass and ePiano play a steady rhythm to anchor the tune and keep it together.

I kept the instruments simple with only the main sample and three main instruments, electric piano, bass and acoustic piano. Any more instruments and I found the tune got too complicated to follow.

Thanks to ElectricLandlady for advice and support.
