Hi Rhonin!

Glad to hear from you :)

A good start in your search is to minus 70 from the current year and go back from there. 70 years after a person dies, their work becomes public domain. There are exceptions, but it’s easy to check by researching the songs you like.

I recommend Civil War era folk songs as a general starting point, as their melodies remain interesting to this day. Nope, this isn’t an endorsement of anything to do with that time period, just that it’s “Americana” and public domain.

Once you find something you like, try using Wikipedia, copyright.gov or anything that can prove it’s public domain, and you should be good to go — just can’t copyright the original, you’ll have to note that in the exceptions part of your registration.

I’m interested to know what you find.
Take care and good luck!

Kind regards,

thanks for your input
I kind of have a hard time defining
‘Americana’ but there are alot of songs
that have seeped into collective unconscious. Things even you forget from childhood,..I wonder who doesnt know Camptown Races
personally i cant help it
I sing ‘Jimmie crack corn and i dont care’ that song is racist AF tho OMG
