Tools I Used

TapTempo, a MIDI controller, a Fender p-Bass, Fender Telecaster, and a BOSS drum machine. Also Audacity for vocal chopping and Reaper for mixing.

Effects: ping pong delay, Tal plate echo

Samples I Used

Bucky Jonson (a trumpet sample, which I put in both solo breaks) and Susannah Kelly parts.

Original Samples

Two clean guitars (one playing cheater chords and the other playing full chords intertwined with lead breaks.) A lead guitar part, the bass, piano. Drums.

Process

I started by using Tap Tempo to guess what tempo Susannah Kelly was in. It was a bit over the map, but I managed to peg down an average of about 78 bpm.

I sliced and diced the vocal to better fit the rhythm and be totally in time with it. Then I added the piano, and put two effects on it: a VSTi piano called "General" and the M-Audio General Midi Module piano called "Rain."

I added two clean Telecaster parts, and then did the lead part using a Tube Screamer, adding Fender amp simulation, a short reverb, and a stereo ping pong delay. I played the lead part in two breaks (I uploaded the first here as a sample.)

Other Notes

It is a very positive song, and I was in the mood for something uplifting. Nonetheless, there is a slightly sad quality to the music, which is fine, since you can't discover beauty without sadness.
