Tools I Used

Cubase 5 with several VSTs:
- Vienna Instruments (strings, horn ensemble, timpanis, gongs)
- Hypersonic 2 (koto)
- Battery 3 (additonial orchestral percussion)
- Maximizer
- Voxengo Soniformer
- Voxengo Saturator
- Steinberg Roomworks
- Steinberg Gate

Process

Classical Midi-Sequencing:
1) Insert vocal tracks (lead and backing vocals) with gater, compressor and global hall-send-fx.

Worked on the chorus first:
2) Bass/Celli track
3) Violin track
4) Violas
5) Koto
6) Recording individual intensities for the tracks with special midi controllers hoping for a more natural feeling

7) Thinking how to work with the 1st verse I dropped the idea of a violin and went for the horn ensemble.
8) Liked the horns and added them to chorus
9) Created instrumental ff part of chorus
10) Wanted to end the song with 1 verse and 1 chorus + instrumental repetition here because otherwise it might become boring.
... (4 hours so far)
11) Decided to go for the full thing and added 2nd verse/chorus and ending.
12) Finetuning with the mixing (playing around with the Reverenc hall plugin but none of the files fits)
13) Adding orchestral percussion
14) Could be finished now (6 hours spent)
...
15) More finetuning especialla flute, brass and violas.
16) Still not perfect but stopping to work on the track for now.
17) ccMixter upload to see what the community thinks about it.

Other Notes

Good results for this piece to using pre-fader-fx-sends in combination with the traditional-orchestral stereo setup for each track.

Not satisfied with the overall "loudness" though, but I did not find a parameter-combination that creates a louder track and still keeps the transparent sound and avoids no clipping.
