Tools I Used

Completely composed in FLStudio 6(which is awesome!) with a little bit of mastering using TC Renaissance Compressor in Wavelab 2. I also used Garritan Personal Orchestra for the harp and bass clarinet, and the Garritan Jazz & Big Band for the drums, percussion, bass, vibes and flute.

Original Samples

I created all of the music except the vocals and the string track which were from Christopher Willits. A couple of the drum loops were SampleFusion loops, and I think 1 or 2 random free loops from the 'net.

Process

All done in FLStudio 6...
I started with just the vocal track, figured out the chords(although I think I turned an Am7 chord into a CM7, but I think it works just fine), and came up with the bass/vibe groove. I then composed the groove ahead/behind the vocal groove which is basically just a Cm7 chord. Changing from the Cm7 to the CM7 posed a bit of a problem, but I think it works with the bar of filtered drums. After that it was just filling out those grooves with different textures of percussion trying to keep it interesting throughout. On a whim I added the flute at the end which I really like.
