Tools I Used

This remix was done using FL Studio to make the grooves and Ableton Live to put everything together.

Samples I Used

I used samples from my personal stash along with the ones supplied for the contest. If you count the amen break as a de-facto public domain, all of the original samples used in this remix are free.

Original Samples

The beats, bass and synths were all programmed from scratch.

Process

As with all hip-hop to dnb remixes, the first step is doubling the tempo. "Remember the name" is perfect for this, as 85bpm x2 = 170bpm - the sweet spot in drum'n'bass.

With that figured out, I started programming the drums and picking up the melody/harmony to create variations on the original theme. I ended out creating a completely new bassline and some synth parts. The original strings were effected and chopped to be used in strategic places.

At this point I had all the pieces ready. With the BPM change, the vocals had to be adjusted a bit so the rapping could match the beats perfectly. The change was rather subtle, but made a really big difference in the end. After putting the voice in, I made some further edits to add breaks and variations on top of the lyrics.

After some hours of mixing, the track was ready. I waited for the next day to see if it passed the "morning after effect" - which it did - and then uploaded it.

Other Notes

I *don't like* Fort Minor, Linkin Part or Mike Shinoda, but I had some good ideas for a remix since the first time I heard the song. It was a rather quick work, finished in two days.
