Process
I found this song in an 1896 book of patriotic hymns. I was struck by the lyric,and by what I subsequently read of JS Dwight.
I asked sackjo22 to do the vocals. I asked Lucas Gonze to play a version on guitar. I took the jLang sample and used it to voice the synth. I took one section of an early version of sackjo's vocals and pitch shifted and delayed to create the chant sound.
I reversed the synth melody to create the opening melody.
I used field recordings to create the campfire feel, and added samples to taste.
Other Notes
Sackjo22 and Lucas did the heavy lifting on this one--the vocals and guitar were so good that I wanted to stay out of their way and just let them speak.
