How I Did It

Fruity Loops Studio and Adobe Audition (this is a plain electronic mix).

The vocals, guitars and beats from the original song, plus some extra percussion elements and new instruments (bass, piano and strings).
Original Samples
I didn't create any "sample" as such. The original guitar line was altered (see "Process"); the bass, piano and strings lines were created from scratch.
Process
The first and most important part was to "re-groove" the guitar samples to give them a different flavor. The beats, bass line and all the rest was built around the new guitar groove.
I used some FX on the vocals; in particular I created a backing stretched "ahhhhhhh" that breaks at the end -- not sure if it is very noticeable in the whole mix.
Other Notes
I found my mix different to the other contest entries because of the guitar regrooving. Most (if not all) the other remixes used the guitar sample "as is".
I particularly like the breakdown with the high strings. I love breakdowns and generally use them in my remixes! :)
