Good to the Last Drop

Searched ccMixter for a drum beat suitable for a 90 bpm funkin’ chill west coast groove. Apoxode’s “The Coffee Shop” provided a 90 bpm beat and a theme, coffee. Searched archive.org for a “good to last drop” coffee commercial. Located a suitably licensed 1955 Maxwell House commercial. Dropped in some Maxwell House vocals, a little ElRon guitar, and we were good to go except for a problem with the drum beat.

When played within the mix, Apoxode’s open high hat (or functionally equivalent drum hit) created a strange sound that was not audible when the drum beat was played solo. Replaced Apoxode’s open hit sound with a 909 open high hat. To dampen the effect of the pitched percussion within Apoxode’s drums track, layered a similar drum pattern over Apoxode’s drum using various drum hits.
