Speck has the gift for making music which is both completely accessible and remarkably experimental. I hoped, when I got him for this assignment, to do something accessible and a trifle experimental. After all, he as some great samples and great songs. But instead what came out is something minimal, a tad emotive, and simple, a bit of nostalgia for which there is no simple decoder ring.

Today I saw an Osprey, a raptor, a beautiful bird of prey, flying overhead. It tilted this way and that way, all in mid-air. When I tried to get a good look in my camera, it floated away. It was there, I saw it, it enchanted, it moved on. I smiled. This is how inspiration works.

Editorial pick

I am thrilled to select “The Code of My Heart” remix by gurdonark as my first editorial pick on CCmixter. This off kilter refrain is an example of the alchemy inherent to the mixter mission.

Derived from two samples by speck, this track creates an original and ethereal mood by weaving a syncopated motif into a free floating ostinato. This track will pair nicely with other elements in a mix.

For me “The Code of My Heart” evokes fond musical memories of guitarists Bill Frissell, Robert Fripp, or Andy Summers in the way a short idea is given freedom to wander in effortless self-examination.

This composition also caught my attention in its explicit effort to comment on our “Crack the Code” theme for this event. I give gurdonark props for making a gesture towards human vulnerability with this heartfelt contribution.
