I found myself fascinated with Serenity Frost’s “temporal chaos”, a collection of electronic sounds meshed together through the happenstance of a browser crash. The admixture of the various tones sounds like noise.
I realized that, as with electronic sound in noise pieces in general, the sample was comprised of worlds of pure tones, combined to reach a discordant whole. I set out to find the beauty in the sample, and to create a simple set of melodies. The entire song is comprised of samples abstracted from the source noise piece. The song was originally called “Stray”, in honor of a stray dog who found a happy new home in as a result of the adoption shelter at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Then I realized that such a dog is never really a stray—only people are astray about how they care for animals. I felt instead this dog was found. I wish for every dog the job of being found in a world in which too many dogs and cats are treated as “strays”.
