So with the one year anniversary of the occupy movement, I thought that I would contribute something to the current political conversation. Ta-da!

A few personal thoughts about the whole Occupy thing. I find myself more or less in alignment with Roger Ebert. I sympathize with the plight of most Occupiers. Having experienced my share of lay-offs, I absolutely know the stress and anxiety of being without a job while trying to make ends meet. However, as a means to actually improve one’s present situation, Occupy tactics just seem to be wildly impractical and kind of silly, particularly while having to pay bills and support a family. Camping in front of office buildings with protest signs just ain’t going to get you a raise or a job. My intent was to convey these sentiments through the music. A little bit of serious mixed with some silly.

Anyway, the lyrics are a parody to Shawn Mullins’ “Lullaby” from the 90s. I was originally planning on creating more of a straight forward parody, perhaps using a karaoke track of the original, but Jeris’ reggae instrumental is a lot more fun. And throwing in some stuff from SpinningMerkaba just seemed appropriate… :)

LYRICS

They let me go just the other day
10 years
Earned me one week severance pay
They’ll still throw their office party
Though I’m no longer there.
Hung out to dry,
I try to act like I just don’t care

But a tough face alone
Won’t pay the rent
I can tell that it won’t be long
Before my last dime is spent
Broken down,
I hang my head to cry
When a friend comes by and says to me

Why don’t we go camp out tonight and
Occupy, occupy
Why don’t we go camp out tonight and
Occupy, occupy
Occupy

We set up camp
Inside the city
On Wall Street with cameras all around
It might look glamorous on TV
But it’s anything but pretty
It’s not as easy as it seems
to stand our ground.
‘cause we’re camping on the sidewalk
And I haven’t showered in weeks.
On a slab of concrete
It’s hard to get much sleep.

It’s hard work just sleeping through the night and
Occupy, occupy
It’s hard work just sleeping through the night and
Occupy, occupy
Occupy

I told my friend I ain’t so sure
About this place
I think I’ll just head home and
Find another job that pays.
He said, We might not have a plan,
But signs and sleeping bags will eventually take down the man. Trust me…

Everything’s gonna be all right if we just
Occupy, occupy
Everything’s gonna be all right if we just
Occupy, occupy
Occupy
