I once sat in a room listening to a small man playing a big guitar. He made it sound like there were at least three players and at the end of the evening he left with a woman 20 years his senior. He later told me their lovemaking had been so passionate that it had felt like he was in bed with three women. Life and art will always be entwined.

I watched the news last night with a report from a Ukraine railway station where groups of men stood watching as their wives and children left for safer places. Tears streamed down their faces as the greatest loves of their lives disappeared into the distance, maybe never to be seen again.

I understand why the West cannot interfere more, but the feeling it leaves hurts so much.

Where creatures formed perform their eager dance
And the victims of lost love hide in the shadows
Where nothing craved is ever left to chance

When all the dust has settled and there’s silence
The choosen will produce the finest words
The lovers will concoct another story
And the daylight it will truly have been served
