it’s not you — if you combine ages of J and me we’d be old enough to marry Anna Nicole Smith.

Funny…but I get your point. Makes me wonder, though. Are we stuck in a time warp stubbornly refusing to give in to the direction of current trends or does great music have phases and eras that we’ll always revisit?

here’s how I rationalize it all:

- I’m not all that talented so I have to make choices. At those times I choose what I hope is ‘good’ over ‘modern’

- when I’m strictly making a piece that reflects me (as opposed to commercial interest) then I use the tools/method/feels/sounds I have available in my brain to express myself — if some of that overlaps with what is modern/popular/current cool, otherwise, I don’t care.

- when I’m asked to do something in a certain genre or with a certain sound, hopefully I can deliver. Doesn’t always work out but I hope my ears are open enough to absorb whatever sounds/feels are needed for the job — whether it’s music from 400 years ago or 4 minutes ago.

In school we used to call this ‘4 bars of anything’ — as in: the musicians at the top of their game could listen to literally 4 bars of anything, sit down at a piano and re-create it.

I don’t know if its me, but everything is sounding nineteen ninety great!!! This track has a melancholiness about it that takes me back about 10 or so years when we were in a post-new jack era (although the music was still influenced by the trend) and all things were good. I could here this on something like the Above The Rim soundtrack or playlist it with albums cuts from Intro, Loose Ends, Silk or Jade. I’m loving this!! Another spring breeze classic.
