Tools I Used

A P-Bass, Alesis Vortex, an Akai LPD-8 drum pad, and a Gibson Les Paul.... all into Apple GarageBand 11.

Samples I Used

I found a sample kit called "Loose Funky Foot" by someone named Dave Merrick that had some great sax parts but some admittedly rough around the edges rhythm section parts and a fake comp guitar. I thought that great sax deserved some solid rhythm section work.

Original Samples

a real comp guitar, a lead guitar part (on the Les Paul), a bass guitar part on the P Bass, an organ part on the Vortex, I played the drums on the LPD-8.

Process

I played the drums first, kick and snare in one pass, and then high hat, toms, and fills on the next (because I am no drummer!)

Then I added a fake bass part on the vortex, just so I would have something to play against. I added the organ now that I had a groove.

Then I went downstairs got the guitar and bass, and replaced the fake bass with real bass. Then I added the rhythm part, and then the bluesy guitar part. The guitar went straight into the board. Garageband has a lot of model amps and stomp boxes, and I tweak those in ways similar to real amps and pedals in real life, and get pretty good sounds.

Other Notes

it seems like CCMixter's been kind of starved for good sample and A cappella uploads lately, so I'm going to try and do something about that.
