“Those are my principles, and if you don’t like them… well, I have others.” — Groucho Marx

“A black cat crossing your path signifies that the animal is going somewhere.” — Groucho Marx

Genesis of the song

After working with an audio sample from the “The Naked City” video, decided to look for some Groucho Marx humor. Found a ”You Bet Your Life” TV show video on archive.org licensed public domain, cut out some minutes of audio dialogue, and pasted the audio into FL Studio 11.

With the Groucho samples in place, decided to look for a smooth hip hop backing track. Blake’s Smooth worked well.

At this point I was done, but never one to leave well enough alone started noodling around with some synthesizers, vocals and guitars. Trying to orbit the broad topic of TV, humor and satire included samples and pells from Javolenus, Speck, Duckett, and Debbizo plus some midi notes to drive four soft synths (Sakura, Sytrus, Piozone and Harmor). Stopped noodling when the remix reached 4 minutes and 30 seconds.

Ran Speck’s Doggone Blues vocal through Izotope’s free Vinyl plugin. Used Image Line’s Gross Beat to glitch the TV announcers voice.
