Hi all,
I just wanted to get your thoughts on whether or not joing a netlabel would be right for me?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of joining a netlabel?

I write a lot of music and normally put it up on my blog for people to hear, at the moment I dont perform live at all.

People release through netlabels for a lot of reasons. Among them might be:
a. an established netlabel may get more traffic than your own website;
b. netlabels sometimes give your work the advantage of a bit of “curation”;
c. netlabels are fun.

Though I release on netlabels (and co-own one), I believe that in the long run “song pages”, “album pages” or some even better cloud arrangement will be the way music is presented—but time will tell.

Netlabels are a wild west of creative commons, free art license and non-conformist sharing. I listen to netlabel artists a lot. I go to individual artists’ pages some, but not as often I download from netlabels.

The only thing I am pretty sure about is that if your dream is to be rich and “discovered”, you’re probably better off singing on reality TV :).
