Process
I ruminate and plan out my harmonic progression over the course of days. I usually reach to a keyboard to work out unique sounding chord voicings that sound interesting. I then start playing with the timbre and texture to suit the mood of the track I'm writing. Once I have a chord progression with the proper voice leading the melody sort of writes itself. The groove comes last for tracks such as this. I wanted a lush organic groove with the imagery of a heart beat. I found a suitable loop and the overlaid percussive accents on top that fit perfectly with the groove.
Ultimately, I decided against cutting up the whale track and rather just overlaid it as is. I felt it shouldn't be altered and rather the track should fit the whales and not the other way around. What you hear has no alterations to the rhythm of whale song naturally recorded.
Other Notes
It brings back up into my soul the painful realization that in spite of the majesty and size of these creatures they are an endangered emotionally intelligent species. Sometimes I wonder if it is them that are smarter than we are in a way. They didn't pollute the earth or build edifices to their own vanity. They didn't spread like a plague and kill and dominate everything in their path in the name of progress.
Who is it that still plays and enjoys each moment of life without disturbing the ecosystem?
