Creative Commons music and worldwide celebrations — a brilliant combination!

Many Mixters have Jamendo accounts already, so when they approached us about a collaborative remix project for the December holiday season it seemed like a great fit. Jamendo’s been a supporter of Creative Commons music from the very beginning.

So, some of Jamendo’s artists are helping us kick off this remix project with these contributions.

‘Tis the Season pells, samples & remixes.

The project phases are:

Nov 25 - Dec 9: Focus on pells, samples & stems. Both Jamendo and ccMixter artists are encouraged to contribute seasonal songs - originals or those in public domain. Spoken word and instrumentals are also encouraged!

Dec 9 - 23: Focus on remixing! Remixes should include at least one of the ‘Tis the Season pells or samples. Feel free to upload remixes before this window too.

Dec 23 - Jan 1: Jamendo & ccMixter will share playlists of the contributed seasonal remixes with their listeners & CC community.

In 2012: Jamendo & ccMixter will curate tracks for a 2012 winter season holiday album. Only CC BY tracks will be considered for the album.

Have a wonderful celebration this season! Thanks for giving the gift of music (we believe it can change the world).

Peace.

Hi ~ Yes, indeed, it’s a brilliant combination!

Allison Crowe records virtually all her music live, or live-off-the-floor, on a single track - which means we’re happy we’re able to find a pell - as so few exist!

Allison’s music is released under a BY-NC-SA license. At the moment, the files posted @
http://ccmixter.org/reviews... - Allison’s pell of “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” - do not have the proper license.

It shows a CC-BY license - but is lacking the NC-SA. Please fix this if you can! (I’ve written Jamendo to let them know as well - but, it’d be a shame if people get confused, so, the sooner the license is made BY-NC-SA, the less chance of that happening.)

Best o’ the season! cheers, Ad

Well, I had thought about doing a take on Little Drummer Boy (think Little Drum n Bass Boy), but alas, it’s not public domain like I had thought.

I found this interesting (and relevant) article that I thought was worth sharing for this project:

I always had the utmost respect for ccMixter and his ethics. That is one of the few website really focused on the free music.

But I am surprised by your collaboration with the company Jamendo. First of all, Jamendo is a company that defend his business. Complaints of its artists are ever more numerous (public site in agony, unfair pay system, no promotion of free music or artists, aggressive marketing techniques …)

If it’s a good new for artists Jamendo who did not know ccMixter, I doubt that the image of ccMixter is up.

While if I don’t understand this merger Jamendo / ccMixter, however, I appreciate you ;)

ccMixter is not merging with Jamendo. We are welcoming artists from both sites to make music together, and we support that effort. Tis The Season is artist centric, and is creative commons licensed, as always. I think this is good news for artists. Let’s give the world some great new seasonal music together!

Just uploaded a NI Kontakt instrument with samples of SackJo22’s voice: SackJo9000. It allows mixters to play her voice by keyboard. To apply proper attribution I uploaded it as a remix. Although for remixing it should be found by others as a sample. Can someone please do the right tag settings to move it to the Tis The Season sample list?

Uploaded now the instrument with samples as sample with CC BY and an extra preview as remix CC BY NC.

Only CC BY tracks will be considered for the album.Had a quick peek at the uploaded samples and pells, and it looked like the Jamendo uploads are all CC-BY-NC. So that would seem to imply, that any remix using the Jamendo materials would actually be precluded from the Album co-curated by Jamendo? Does that seem a bit odd, or maybe I’m just missing something? :-)

yea, they were first under CC BY and then they changed them all to CC BY NC — i tried to explain this will preclude them from being on their album. trying to educate people about licenses requires a lot of patience (sometimes more than i have).

you are far too kind! i’m trying to convince these artists CC BY is not a bad thing — it is a good thing! but hey, people are embedded in the old model more than i remember. ccM is the most evolution place for music, and i’m just happy this is my music home.

thanks for your support everyone!

Well, I guess the call for stems and samples focuses on ‘new’ recordings. Though I want to point to an amazing collection of Christmas songs, short stories and poems I found at libirivox.org

At LibriVox, volunteers record chapters of books, short poems, carols e.a. in the public domain into digital audio, and then make the audio files available without any license restrictions.

Some great singers over there:

http://librivox.org/christmas-short-works-2010-by-various/
http://librivox.org/christmas_poetry_and_hymn_collection/

Unfortunately the samples are limited to 128kbps.
Though, maybe some usefull material for ‘Tis the Season?

Forgot one hint:

For a more comfortable listen you can open each of the above collections at archive.org - it has a player integrated, so you can easily switch through the samples.

On the top of each collection page there’s a link labeled ‘Internet Archive page’ that leads there.

I submitted a sample on 11/26 for this but it seems to no longer be listed in the samples section. It still has the tag on it for tis_the_season. Sample is here if people are interested and it is CC BY. I think other samples submitted pre 11/30 may also have dropped off?

Let’s utilize some of these wonderful samples & pells in remixes focused on the New Year — we’re moving into 2012! We’re gonna party like it’s 2011…

What do you think?

I’m working on a track right now on this subject that I plan to upload tomorrow after a few more tweaks. Hoping ya’ll might have some time to remix too so we can ring in the New Year with music from each other (the only music I listen to these days….)

Peace.
