The lyrics are from an old translation (1920) of a poem by Ancient Greek poetess Sappho (c. 600 BC).

LYRICS (Sappho)

“To One False In Love”

Oh, false as fair!
I am forgotten, then, by thee?
And on another shine,
Eyes that once gazed into mine;
Pretence of love all faithlessly.
Out! I don’t care
For such as can true love deny:
Love on forsworn your little day,
You’re nothing to me.

An ancient poem comes back to life as a very beautiful song. Sappho would be proud!
