Beyond the reaches of the rim
a lone satellite listens to the void
transmitting the poem of space back home
constantly reciting the notes of the quantum foam.

Suddenly the pleasant fuzz of the turbulence
shifts suddenly into a warbling echo
a transmission from some approaching source
a probe or a fleet, a envoy or an invasion
an unknown voice speaking in the wilderness.

We examine it
looking for the pattern and sign
looking for the message and meaning
hoping we understand
in time.
