About Me
Story Behind HSMG…
Born and raised in Oakland Ca, Jaye Sanders made his first melody at 8 years old. This singer/songwriter/producer began writing his own songs and making beats at the age of 13.
In the 1990’s, having roommates, a household full of producers, deejay’s, and just all around music lovers always surrounding him while coming up in the Bay Area…exposed him to different musical blends and styles in all the city clubs. Jaye would be in the studio all day and make beats; then strike out at night on his bike to all the stores before they’d close to do his shopping. Needless to say he had “Dummy Dedication.”
Jokingly dubbed the nickname, “The Black Moby” a true Hip Hop head at heart, but music started becoming a reflective of all the records his roommates were spinning at the time.
When asked about the nickname Jaye says, “I didn’t mind really!” “Moby’s a great musician!..I heard lots of different artists that my roommates would play..Moby’s records was just very popular in the house” Jaye remembers, “Ha!…His sound was definitely starting to come out in my beat production..” “I suppose it’s like this quirky funkyness type of thing…I guess.”
In 1998, after noticing a fan base beginning to mobilize and frequent the places he would perform and deejay, then support a lot of the infamous “Rent Parties” they’d have each month…Jaye decided to take his passion for music to the next level and start a music entertainment/production label of his own.
Once coming home late night from a local club, Jaye finds himself locked out the house.
Because he lost his set of keys just 3 days earlier-it leaves him banging on the door and windows to wake his roommates sprawled out on the living room floor. Realizing his roommates weren’t getting up to open the door, he wedged a side window, pulled himself up and was amazed to stand in the midst of his roommates asleep with the music blaring in the background.
Jaye couldn’t get over the fact that his roommates were such hard sleepers. This perplexed him and also left him slightly jealous. Hanging out with everyone the following weekend, he tried ripping into them for not being awake to open the door for him and they all just laughed. They had absolutely had no idea what he was talking about…
Up late in the house studio, thinking reflectively about last Saturday night..how they all seemingly had these blank euphoric expressions on all their faces, passed out, and essentially dead to the world ( for a number of hours at least).
Relatively a light sleeper himself… Jaye explains, “I could have been anybody coming in on them!” “I made a ton of noise climbing through the window…and none of them wakes up??”
Recognizing how dangerous being a hard sleeper can potentially be, he still couldn’t help but think to himself, “It sure must be nice!” Jaye later calmly admits to having this silly fixation towards hard sleepers.
After running a couple of names by her, Jaye goes with the name HardSleeper when his girlfriend told him, “ cool the way that sounds …suits you…kinda against tha grain!” Jaye expressively responds back,“Yup!, It’s like an ability I don’t have but I want…” (Sleeping hard )
Jaye found it easy to follow his affinity for music. HardSleeper Music Group’s sound is eclectic and as diverse as that of the Bay Area.
HSMG is a Throwback to the Hip Hop production style of the 1990’s with a Today’s Edge.
In 2010, Jaye’s company is occupying a much larger production space for artistic and commercial use.
In the past 3 years, because of the support of the label’s core audience, they’ve been able to exclusively service and cater to the best underground Hip Hop artists, Electronic and Dance artists here in the United States and abroad.
