How I Did It
Tools I Used
Ableton Live 5
Samples I Used
Samples from the cited song (vocals, acoustic guitar strumming, bassline, electric guitar accents), two drum loops, a kick drum sample.
Original Samples
None of the samples were recorded by me.
Process
I first roughed it out in Live using my Trigger Finger as a control source. I transitioned the bass and acoustic guitar parts back and forth across their changes by using one of the TF's pots to control Live's 'crossfade' function while altering the filter frequency on the guitar track with another pot.
Then I went back through, adding the vocals, shortening the running time, and reversing a couple of transitions.
After a couple more passes spent refining levels and filter cues, I was ready to output and master.
Other Notes
I originally imagined this would end up as a six-minute long drone fest, but that bassline really pulled me to my senses.
The beat I ended up with strikes me as a tad weak, but beats are usually my weakness. I prefer to concentrate on the changes and reveals. I think I managed to build some good ones in here.
Anyway, my hat is off to Brad's original. I still prefer it.
