How I Did It
by Admiral Bob
Tools I Used
drum machine, Crystal synth, Fender Telecaster, M-Audio Piano, StringZ VSTi, Rednef Twin, simulanalog Tube Screamer, Reaper, Classic EQ, some clangy thing I bought in PEI.
Samples I Used
St. Paul's "L'esprit desire encore"
Original Samples
Everything else. Most off the beaten path was the distant clanging sound at the start. That was made by an exotic percussion instrument I bought in PEI while I was away, that makes the sound of things clanging in drain pipes. Might feature in my music a lot now. :)
Process
To ensure that I'd be doing something with a reprise I put the vocal into the mix twice. The second I put through a Tube screamer, and EQed everything below 2.8 mhz and everything above 4 mhz out.
I set a click track, and added a string pad using StringZ (tried a dozen different pads before finding one.) I then added the viola, and then the beeps in Crystal. I tried playing the bass on the keys with a house bass sound in Crystal but it wasn't full enough - there's nothing like a real bass, so I went and got the P-bass out.
I ended with the guitar part, using a simulation of my live playing rig (Tube Screamer through a slight slap-back delay into a Fender Twin). The Simulanalog guitar suite can really get the sound nearly exactly.
I EQed the final mix for a bit of air, compressed it, and then put it through the limiter twice. It was a very quiet mix, so I had to work to give it some kick.
Other Notes
I grew up in a French part of town. Between that and wanting to continue my musical conversation with Per, there was no question I was going to tackle this. Am I happy?
Yep, because I got to use my noisemaker.
