Original Samples
Vocals, Keys, Bass, Sliced up a stock FL drum loop
Process
Started out just playing with FL Keys. Hit upon some chords and a way of playing them that I liked, and recorded the sequence. Tweaked using piano roll (my close friend lately). Then did the bass. I didn't mess with any settings, EQ, or anything on they keys & bass - presets all the way.
Next I found a drum loop in FL's "packs" that liked, and I made 5 or 6 variations using the FL Slicer that I used throughout the track.
Then I exported the instrumental as a wav, imported that into Krystal Audio Engine, recorded the vocal, muted the instrumental, exported the vocal, and imported it back into FL.
Then I applied the "ambient" reverb preset to the vocal. Everything I just described was some work I did last weekend. Tonight I imported Puie's sample in FL Slicer, and bumped the pitch up 1.1 semitones so it would be in the same key. Then I found the parts of the sample I wanted to use, pasted them into several sequencer tracks, and placed them in the rest of the mix. And then I applied the same ambient reverb.
Lastly, I just adjusted the volume of the different sounds in the mix (mainly turned the volume down on the oboe - it doesn't have to be loud to be heard), and exported the mp3.
Other Notes
It feels good to be making some instrumental sounds to go along with my vocals (vox are my comfort zone). I realize I have a long way to go, but it feels good to be learning & improving. On some of the more instrumental things I've done before, I've felt like the results were partially by accident - on this track I was able to be more intentional..... .. .
