A hangover from a night of heavy drinking is just the worst. So much worse. It is terrifying in so many ways. The body wants to shut down. It wants so many things at once and it just cripples you. You can’t eat but you need an ocean of water. The sunlight hurts. Your brain wants to explode. The memories come and destroy you. If you have a long travel back home it gets even worse. You count the minutes and miles. The seconds. Shaking and dying for your own bed.

I stopped drinking over 20 years ago. I was living in Hong Kong when I decided that my body needed a rest from its daily dose of alcohol. So with little fanfare I just stopped and haven’t succumbed to the god Bacchus since that day.

I have rephrased Robs poem slightly and omitted a couple of words but apart from that its as he spoke it.

The mix starts as the eyelids peel back and the sobering volunteer peers out from the bedclothes. Robs visit for a checkup brings up the subject of “how much do you drink” and good intentions are offered up to the nurse who has heard it all before. The light of sobriety shines down before suddenly the good promises crash into the waiting bar top and the bartenders apron.
