The music we share on ccMixter/dig.ccmixter is part of a vital, growing body of work that we hope to promote, share and protect as much as we can. We are pleased to let you know that ccMixter is working closely with other CC content providers to address some of the increasingly complex issues that are arising with the use of Creative Commons licenses. In cooperation with Soundcloud, Free Music Archive, Jamendo, Freesound, Creative Commons, and the Cultural Commons Collection Society, we are working to develop best practices, tools and systems to help anyone who either creates or uses CC licensed content to ensure license terms are complied with, and to facilitate proper use of CC content. Some of the issues we have identified include:

* proper attribution
* inappropriate take down notices by content distributors (i.e., Youtube)
* unauthorized commercialization of CC-licensed content
* co-opting of CC-licensed material
* content tagging so that critical license information remains with the sound file
* commercial licensing options

This process is in its early stages, but we do believe that by working together with other CC content providers, we can enhance the mechanisms by which our sounds are shared or distributed by developing consistent best practices that will create a new standard in a creative environment that relies more and more heavily on CC licensed content.

Thanks for so eloquently documenting this Susan! We’re excited about working together to help set new standards and best practices for CC licensed music. ccMixter is a leader in this space, largely because the music here is of such quality. Thanks to all of you. Peace.
