Ability to select more restrictive licenses for remixes

I was looking for info on this - and the most recent thread I could find was this - alas with no answer.

I was surprised to find out (after the fact) that samples listed as BY are treated as BY-SA when you upload a remix of them.

I would prefer to have a choice of whether to upload my new version with a more restrictive license (e.g., NC), and not have to do a workaround (as described in the thread above).

Note: this isn’t a discussion about whether BY or NC are more appropriate to this site - my latest piano upload was BY - I just wanted to raise that think we should be able to pick a license.

The opposite was discussed here. ;)

Thanks - I completely forgot about that thread, and couldn’t find through the search.

OK - so in the meantime - could we please get a “note:” or “FYI:” or something on the upload page with so that it’s more clear before uploading?

Thankso mucho.

At the risk of sounding dismissive, it’s been this way for a couple of years now since the start of this site. And as far as I know, it’s never caused any serious issues. The changes are on their way so I think it’s just best to sit tight in the meantime.

we tried doing what suggested, iow, the site used to work that way.

However, you can only display more restrictive licenses on the remix submit form, which of course, is dynamically changing as you tick off sources - and if you choose anything from magnatune or freesound it goes completely dark because those are sampling+ and sharealike.

Based strictly on the amount of user confusion, that was more confusing that doing it quietly.

As you point out, it’s hardly ideal but a dummy source and/or contacting the admins for a change seems to be working.

while doing the upload there is a box in the sources search widget that explicitly says “This remix will be license as…” etc. If there’s something else we can do to make it clearer let me know (please include wording because I stink at that)

ok, I’ve taken another stab at this (frightened as I was by spin’s cczero upload ;)) - You can see the new code in action when uploading a remixing and browsing through potential sources. (pick spin’s or some BY samples)

I’m guessing it’s along the lines of what you’re looking for, I just hope it’s not too confusing to everybody elese…

Perfect. It’s precisely what I had in mind - thank you.

Maybe you could have a link right there to explain. It could say:
“why do I have a choice of licenses?”, or
“how come I can’t I change the license?”

or something like that - depending on whether it’s share alike or not - linking to a very simple explanation of the two.

Thanks again - nice work.
