The Angophora reference is close but a little different than you thought - Angophora Costata, the Pink Apple Gum Tree, one of the most beautiful trees in the world but will only grow around Sydney in its true form - luscious smooth pink bark and a large crown of big grotesque branches that will drop on your head in the slightest breeze. AKA “the widow maker”. To protect themselves against injury or insect attack they bleed this fluorescent red clear sap that flows down the branches like a butchered ballerina.
Don’t pitch your tent (or pole) under one!
Even the Koalas are scared of them.
