The reference in the first verse is to the guiding star that led the shepherds and kings to the place where the child Jesus was born and is in the person of one of the shepherds The second verse relates to the events that will surely take place in 30 years time when Jesus is crucified and denounced by his own people. It is for sure a dark carol but a carol it is!
