How I Did It
by alexdsteak
Uses samples from:
Tools I Used
Cubase Sx3 for tracking;
Clavia G2x for computer noises, filtered into a self-built analogue modular synthesizer;
Korg Ms-20 for the continuous bass, also additionally
processed by the modular;
PCM70 for various delays overdubbed;
Audiocard is a Echo Layla 3G, on a Tascam M1600.
Final mastering on an old Akai GX-370D reel to reel
tape recorder.
Samples I Used
some of the stems available from State Shirt's
"Computer", notably the voice track, the acoustic and
the electric guitar;
Original Samples
the old-computer-like noises and the bass line
Process
Everything started with the acoustic guitar loop, that
I timestretched to half of the tempo, plus adding some
close delay effect.
On top of that, I got another acoustic guitar loop from
the original stems and really "obfuscated" it through
the modular synth filters and by an excessive use of
delays.
After I got those sounds in the way I liked, I loaded the voice stem and started doing proper synchronization of samples. The voice has been added some reverb just to give it even more space, but no particular treatment aside of some compression to better integrate it in the mix.
The computer sounds are random generating patterns out
of the Clavia G2x, while the continuous bass line is
aptly provided by the Korg Ms-20.
Other Notes
it was very fun to remix this track, I like when I can
change the aspect of a song so much, something like
going in the totally opposite direction that the
original artist might have envisioned originally :D
This is the reason for remixes, IMHO...
BTW, for those asking, I know that the number of the Altair has been "misspelled", that was intentional as well (even though the processor inside of it was the Intel 8080) :D
