Back in my hometown
Back with nothing to show
Back to sign on
Another little dagger
They’ve done it up since I was last here
Done it out in yellow and blue
It looks alright but the light’s too bright
Hot strip lights on a low ceiling, don’t they know that’s not right?

The sad looking black girl
With a pale birthmark under one eye
The skeleton of a white man
Another little dagger
He’s got paint on his jacket
It’s the one he was wearing before
He’s got a shaving cut under his left ear
And another one on his jaw

Walking back down the school road
Nothing’s changed in my hometown
Nothing’s changed for me either
Another little dagger
Old men on their own walking dogs
Old women in twos and threes
All on a stick and they all look sick

A worn out rag of a woman
Scuffed trainers and a greasy coat
Crossed the road without looking
Another little dagger
A man with monster sideburns
All belly over dirty jeans
Came out of the scrapyard and surveyed the scene

The only beautiful thing in here
Is the Asian girl on the phone
And I have to look away from her
Another little dagger
The people are different people
But the people are the same as well
Any light that gets through is a flashback to you
I’m last in the queue with the roughneck crew

Moonlight does not become me
It does not go with my hair
It’s a knife unsheathed by fingers of cloud
Another little dagger
The scrap yard dog was watching me
With quietly complicated eyes
The scrapyard dog was watching me
