Doug Whitfield of Music Manumit speaks about copyright in various settings, including a recent appearance at Transparency Camp in Washington D.C. He has shared his slides which include some copyright basics that may be helpful for understanding a potentially thorny issue. ( Here and here.) (Even though his presentation focuses on software there is some global information in there.)

remember, an artist is protected by copyright law as soon as a piece is performed publicly, distributed via recorded media for free or for sale. it is not necessary to apply for copyright with the library of congress to defend copyright claims. but it IS incumbent on artists to be aware of track backs and unauthorized usage on iTunes, youtube music, etc. usually the original c owner requests that a trak be withdrawn rather than suing for damages. jes sayin’.
