Uses samples from:

Tools I Used

PreSonus AudioBox USB 96 audio interface; Samson SR950 headphones; Harley Benton 8-string electric guitar; PreSonus Studio One 3 and Zynewave Podium.

Samples I Used

I remixed the acapella stem of 'Barbed Wire Fence' by spinningmerkaba.

Original Samples

I recorded seven different guitar tracks with my HB 8-string electric guitar and BIAS Amp by PositiveGrid:

Two main rhythm guitar tracks and two additional guitar tracks in the chorus (both left & right). For both rythm guitars I used a model of a Peavey 6505 amp.

For the two clean guitar tracks (left & right) I used a model of a HiWatt amp, for the guitar solo (mono) a model of a Mesa/Boogie Mark V amp.

For all guitar tracks I used a model of a Mesa/Boogie 4x12 Rectifier cabinet.

Process

Vocals:

The original acapella is a stereo file that contains two vocal tracks (left & right). First I've split the file to get two independent mono vocal tracks. I've used one track as main vocal track during the entire song and added the second track in the chorus only to give the vocals more depth. With Melodyne I adjusted some notes in both vocal tracks. After that I used an A1 Stereo Control VST by Alex Hilton and the vocal spread preset of the Classic Chorus VST by Kjaerhus Audio to make the vocals sound a bit wider. I also added a Ruby Tube VST for saturation, an AM Track SE vintage compressor VST by MAGIX (...yes, really!) and an Ambience Reverb VST by Magnus SmartElectronix. Finally I added a TAL Dub-II and DUB-III Delay VST to the vocals in the chorus.

Drums:

For the drumtrack I used a TAL Tube VST to add saturation and to boost the high frequencies of the drums. I also mixed the kick and the snare a bit more upfront with a BootEQ Mk. II equalizer VST and cut some noisy low frequencies with a TDR Nova equalizer VST.

Bass:

I used the model of a picked Epiphone bass from the Broomstick Bass VST instrument by Bornemark with an Ignite Amps SHB-1 bass amp VST. To make the bass fit better in the mix I added a Ruby Tube VST for saturation and a BootEQ Mk. II equalizer VST.

Guitars:

Apart from the BIAS amp VST I also added a Ruby Tube VST, a Masquarade Xtra equalizer VST by Terry West and a BootEQ Mk. II. For the clean guitar I also added a Classic Chorus VST by Kjaerhus Audio and a TAL Dub-II delay VST.

Synthesizer:

I used three different synthesizers in this remix, an EVM DvX1, an EVM Ultrasonic for the choir and some strings in the chorus and a TAL NOIzE M4K3R. To the strings and the choir I also added the Classic Chorus VST and the Masquarade Xtra equalizer.

Mastering:

For the mastering process I used the parallel processing technique. I created one mixdown with the entire mix incl. all effects and one track without delay effects and without drums. In a seperate session I slightly added the mixdown without delay and drums to the fully mixed track.

As mastering effects I used a Bootsy Rescue MK 2 mid/side processor VST, a Destiny MK III equalizer VST, a Tesla SE Tube VST, the Masquarade Xtra equalizer, the TDR Nova equalizer and the After Mastering Processor VST by Terry West.

Other Notes

The new equipment sounds a lot better than all the stuff I used to work with so far, but at the moment it's very difficult for me to mix with them because I didn't have the time to get used to it's sound yet. So I would appreciate your thoughts, comments and recommendations about the sound of this mix, especially from those of you who know my previous mixes. Many thanks!
