Take the Time to Listen
Jason & the bit crushed backup singers

Major mixing and mastering software upgraded to Izotope Music Production 2.1 Advanced Bundle which provided Neutron 3, Nectar 3, VocalSynth 2 and Ozone 8. Also, tried out the Tonal Balance Control and InSight 2 plugins provided in the bundle to monitor and control loudness.

Tried a small portion of all the upgraded modules on this mix except to RX 7 Connect and Relay.

We don’t usually turn on the automated analysis and mixing assistance. We like to use mid-side on several mastering processes and the AI (it is not evil?) assist seems focused on stereo EQ, Dynamic EQ and Compression processes. Nonetheless, the analysis and assistance with new software is more thorough and complex deserving a try out on this mix. The results lacked sparkle; went back to the TRF signature mid-side mastering approach. The AI assist stereo mix is uploaded as an alternative mix for anyone curious.

Used Nectar 3 and Neutron 3 to bring out Jason’s voice. Used Neutron 3 on the synth line and Susan’s vocal sample “listen”.

Ran Susan’s voice through VocalSynth 2 using the “Breeze Through the Trees” preset. Stretching Susan’s sample to fit crushed the humanity out of the voice. With the two other samples saying the “listen”, the bit crushed back up singers sounds more like unintelligible robot then singers but trying out synthesized vocals was the motivation.

Ran the synth lead through the Amplitube 4 Leslie 122 feature.

Wrt the parts of Jason’s pell selected, focused on the river, the drinking water, rhythm of the universe, rhythm of our time and listening to the trees. Listening to the river and the trees are good rasta poetry topics.
