Before I give in to these shackles and doldrums
I’ll quickly recall all those ebullient toasts
You gave at my weddings, my funerals and birthdays
The Champagne we popped as we sailed to the coast

I should be unfurling my banners of conquest
Banishing tyrants
Returning the spoils
I should be out tending my beautiful horses
Proud heads held high
As they cart in my Joy

There’s a blanket of doubt
Which now lays at our bedside
A warm shaft of sunlight falls upon our embrace
As we promise ourselves
No more stooping – or faltering
As we watch shadows vanish
Leaving no trace
