Ashwan has been with ccmixter since 2005 putting out really strong tunes and more recently amazing remixing. I chose a couple of early, more rock oriented tunes to mash together.

This tune is made from samples from the tunes Cracker and NO, except the snares and guitar where I copied Ashwan’s riffs and rhythms, then used my own instruments. I am hoping the enhanced snares add drive to the tune.

I listened to the tunes a few times wondering what I could do and decided on a more commercial approach for Cracker. I added some hooks to Ashwan’s original which I created from a few samples from his tune NO. I extended the intro. I re-arranged the guitar figures to create some call-response and introduced silences to give contrast. The stab sounds are samples of the bass from NO pitched up by 3 octaves.

The two tunes are cut into 48 samples of various lengths which I mixed up and put together as intro, verse, chorus, break, chorus, break, verse, chorus. In the breaks I emphasise John Van Buren’s bass playing.

I got the assignment late Sunday and finished it Monday. I thought this tune wasn’t representative of Ashwan’s style so I remixed another tune on Thursday http://ccmixter.org/files/Q...

Edit: John Van Buren wrote and sang ‘Crackerbread’ and also plays bass.
