As soon as I read about the ’Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Remix’ Project, I thought of my grandmother, Mabel Ings, and Peggy Janeway, who was like a second mum to my sister and me when we were little girls. These two women were dedicated recyclers long before the word came into general use. Money was tight, it’s true, but I believe they took pleasure in finding ingenious ways of mending or finding new uses for clothes and objects. Nanny and Peggy were neither greedy nor ambitious; they were essentially contented with their lot.

(Apologies for the long gap at the beginning with me sniffing!)

MEND

Mend and make do
Does it have to be new?
Don’t spoil our space
And Earth’s beautiful face

We’re running out of time
Ignoring all the signs
Will we choke or survive?
Will we hurt others’ lives?

We reap as we sew
We don’t want to know
Blind eye or sight?
Give up or fight?

Mend and make do
Does it have to be new?
Don’t spoil our space
And Earth’s beautiful face

Ashamed of humankind
No heart and all mind
Pollution and mess
Making more, leaving less

Make do and mend
Nurture and tend
Look at this place
Love Earth’s beautiful face
Play Mend
