ccMixter’s Birthday Secret Mixter-22 Years of Making Music Together

On October 28, ccMixter turns twenty-two. Old enough to have scars. Young enough to still believe the next great thing might happen tomorrow.

For twenty-two years, ccMixter has been doing something that was never supposed to be easy. It has asked musicians to give something away before they knew what it might become. It has asked strangers to trust one another. A voice becomes a rhythm. A guitar becomes a texture. A mistake becomes the best part of the song.

That takes a certain kind of courage. So the final Secret Mixter of this year is called Grace Under Pressure.
The phrase belongs to Ernest Hemingway, who wrote:

“Courage is grace under pressure.”

Pressure changes things. So does oxygen.

Copper – the traditional 22nd anniversary gift – left in the open air begins to change. It darkens. It oxidizes. Eventually it develops a patina. What was once bright and new becomes beautiful in a different way. Music does that too.

That is why 22 feels right for this birthday.

In the Tarot, twenty-two is the Fool—the traveler stepping onto the road without knowing exactly where it leads. With each remix, we step onto an unfamiliar road.
