We have a robust copyright violation reporting mechanism, and we have vigilant users who watch everything that comes in, and who have deep knowledge of music in many genres, and recognize sources. I don’t think ccMixter, personally, is at much risk of running afoul. CCMixter is a copyleft-oriented site, so our whole model doesn’t really work if people upload proprietary music. Just like Linux doesn’t let Windows code into the Linux repo, we don’t put proprietary content into the media pool.

There will be demonstrations against this censorship machine in the next few weeks. The biggest problem is that even small forums have to worry about an ‘upload filter’. No matter how honest the upload or from own source comes. Many forums will not be able to afford it. They have to check every text, every picture and every musicsample.
